The Struggling to Get Started Mindset
It was Monday morning. As Michael Jackson bellowed my “change starts with me” anthem: “I'm starting with the man in the mirror. I'm asking him to change his ways.”, I slid my finger across the screen of my phone, turning off the alarm, then I lay in bed thinking about needing to get up to workout.
I considered taking the day off to rest. At least, that was the rationale processing in my head to make me feel better about possibly not working out that morning. It was evident, I was struggling to get started, much like how I was struggling to start can. will. DONE.
Are You Struggling to Get Started?
Are you struggling to get started with something you say you desire to do? My hope is that what follows will move you from struggling to get started to starting today with what you desire to do.
Fight Through Your Struggles
Sluggishly, 45 minutes later, I got out of bed to start my morning routine. I drank my half liter of water, hit the bathroom, popped in the contacts, got dressed, then headed downstairs to workout. As I made the short trek to the living room, an idea popped into my head.
Thinking that others may struggle to get moving on something that they need or desire to do, I decided to video record a portion of my workout. As I looked back at the video, it became evident that what resulted was more than a video of me working out; it was evidence of what happens when you are willing to fight through your struggles.
Move from Struggling to Conquering
Take note of how I am noticeably struggling in the first 14 seconds of the video, then fast forward to minute six.

Did you see how I moved from struggling to conquering? Did you notice the difference in my demeanor and my attitude? I go from struggling to get started, to professing my love for Shaun T. (minute 5:40), to being your champion for change.
Struggling to Get Started Ends When You Start
In the video, there is a move (Speed + agility – ‘Up, center, back, center, wide’) I tell you I struggled with the first few times I tried it. At minute 4:28 you will see that I am no longer struggling with that move, but I do lose focus in the process of doing it while talking to you. Why do I tell you this?
Because, in life, there will be things that will be hard at first. We may trip over ourselves, fall, or fail, but the best way to handle struggling to get started, and to see a difference in your life, is to get started. It is not a question of if you will get started, it is a question of when. I encourage you to start today.
